Airport Security Tips
If you travel by commercial airliner, you will absolutely go through the airport security checkpoint. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA), a part of Homeland Security, is the government agency responsible for administering airport security.
Airport security procedures are mostly always annoying, no matter how necessary they are. In addition, the rules change often. Here are some tips for getting through airport security with the least amount of grief possible. The key is to know before you go just what you are allowed and what is prohibited.
First, allow for plenty of time for the screening. Procedures are becoming much more efficient than they were originally. However, you never know when there will be a backup.
Consider how you will dress. While you may want to dress with loosely fitting clothing for comfort, know that if your clothes are so loose that they could conceal any prohibited items, you will be redirected to a private screening. This applies to religious and non-religious clothing alike.
In addition, try to avoid clothing with metal parts, which will set off the metal detectors. These include, but are not limited to, the following.
- Attached jewelry
- Clothing with metal buttons or snaps
- Hair barrettes made of metal
- Metal belt buckles
- Under-wire bras
- Hidden items such as body piercings
In addition, prior to the screening, be sure to take all metal objects out of your pockets before passing through the screening equipment. These include, but again are not limited to, the following.
- Keys
- Pens
- Coins
- Cell phone
- Jewelry
TSA agents must identify any and all metal items so there is no point not to put them in the separate basket prior to passing through the personal scanner. Failure to do so will just extend your screening time.
Every adult traveler must keep his boarding pass and a government issued ID available for the agents during the screening process.
You will have to remove your shoes. There are no exceptions, even sandals. Your shoes go through the X-Ray machine with your other items.
If you are disabled, have special medical conditions or a prosthetic device, notify the agent and you will receive a separate inspection. Be sure to allow for extra time for this, just in case this line is crowded.
The regulations regarding the ban on liquids, aerosols and gels are in a state of flux. Be sure you understand what you can take on-board before you get to the airport.
Never make inappropriate remarks about the security screening process. If there is the slightest doubt, don’t say it. You may think your comments are innocuous but if the agent thinks otherwise, you will be questioned privately.
The best way to get through airport security with the least amount of aggravation is to know what to do and what to you can carry. Arrive early so you don’t miss your flight. Be understanding and patient. The TSA agents are there to protect you, as well as all the other passengers.
