Tips for Traveling by Bus

Most people think of bus travel as cheaper than either air or train travel, and this is true. However, for others, the journey is as anticipated as the destination. For them, it is a relaxing stress reliever. No one can harass them on the bus. Regardless of your reasons to travel by bus, you should be aware of these simple tips to help make the journey more enjoyable.
Even if your goal is to get away rather than to save money, you should still look into ways to save on your ticket. Discounts are usually available for seniors, children and other companions, military personnel and for members of many organizations such as AAA. In addition, look to advanced purchased tickets for savings. If you just want to go and you are in no real hurry to get there, consider buying a pass that allows for unlimited travel within a specified time period.
Just like other means of transportation, there are also many specials on offer. Again just like other transportation methods, these are frequently great values, although they often come with strings attached.
Once again, as is common elsewhere, be sure you understand the baggage limitations and pack accordingly. One major difference is that, if you are changing buses, your bags will not automatically be rerouted. It’s up to you to get them off one bus and on to the next.
Seats are usually first come–first serve. It’s in your best interest to arrive at the terminal early.
Before you leave, try to have a short chat with the driver. Tell him you are not an experienced bus traveler. Hopefully, you won’t have any issues in route, but if you do, it might be useful when you are trying to sort out your situation in the confusion.
On long trips, there will be maintenance stops. Here you will get off the bus. You may leave things on the bus if you wish. If so, remember that one, nothing stays on the floor where they need to clean; and two, the bus is not responsible for loss.
When the bus stops for maintenance, or to pick up new passengers, be sure you know when you must be back. The bus will not wait for you, nor will it offload your belongings.
If you are traveling on the aforementioned unrestricted tticket, you still need to get back to the terminal early. Seats will once again be first come–first serve.
Yes, travel by bus is cheaper and this may be the only reason you chose it. Or, you may just want to “get away”. Maybe you have a sense of wanderlust. Regardless of your motive for traveling by bus, you should want to know a little about it before you go. Bus travel can be very interesting, but you need to understand some of the differences between it and other forms of travel with which you may be more familiar.
