Make your Next Business Flight Stress-Free

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Make your next business flight stress-free.

For the well-seasoned business traveler, preparations for a smooth journey are often as important as the business that is at hand. If however, you are new to business travel, you may need a few pointers to make your trip less troublesome. Read on for some helpful tips.

Many major cities are served by more than one airport. Most of the time, one of them will be cheaper than the other(s). However, sometimes the savings on the less expensive flight is more than offset by the extra distance from the airport to your final destination. In addition, sometimes the less expensive airports have inconvenient connections. Look into the options in advance before you decide to buy your ticket based on price alone.

How flexible is your schedule at your destination? If you can alter your schedule, you may be able to select a different, and cheaper, flight. Alternatively, you may be able to pick a flight that avoids traffic to your departure airport, from your arrival airport, or both.

Booking in advance is generally going to mean a cheaper ticket price. However, you don’t always have this luxury. When you can book in advance, you may be able to save time as well as money

Double check that your documentation is in order, including passports, tickets, visas, insurance, hotel confirmations and contact information. It is a good idea to copy this and keep it separate from your other papers, just in case you loose you briefcase or luggage.

Security regulations are in a state of flux. Check on what is current before you arrive at the airport. This applies to all the airports you will use.

The same applies to your luggage. Be sure your luggage fits the airlines’ requirements. Exceptions are very expensive and once you have arrived at the airport, you don’t have a lot of options, other to pay up.

Have some local currency with you, about a day’s worth, before you leave. There are countless times when planes are delayed and the airport moneychanger is shut down by the time you get there.

Don’t rush on the day of travel. Plan in advance how long you will need to get to the airport, get checked-in and through security and government formalities.

Investigate the weather at your designation(s). You don’t want to leave Miami for Helsinki in the winter without a coat.

Find out what communications are available to you on the airplane, at all the airports you will use as well as in your hotels. You may have delays or other reasons to contact someone on short notice.

Look into frequent flyer programs and airline club lounges. These perks can make a big difference in your travel, especially if it is long range.

The key is to engage in a little planning before you go. If you can make your journey a little smoother, you will be just that much more ready for the business at hand at your destination. The experienced traveler knows how important this already, and you will also know it soon enough.

Airlines Hope for Business Travel Rebound

traveling by plane safely

Anybody who has flown during the summer can attest that the American airlines did a great job in filling up their airplanes, most of all when it came to the domestic routes. However, just as summer romances end, the focus would be on what would happen after Labor Day, with family vacations done and children back to school.

Airlines are worried, in particular, about whether they will attract top paying business travelers, a lot of which this year decide to remain at home or get discounted coach seats instead of purchasing full-fare tickets. There is obviously, at the proper prices, lots of demand for leisure. The true question would be: What would the correct demand for business be as the fall season arrives?

The nine biggest carries of the nation as a whole group have sharply cut down their overall capacity from the summer of 2008 by 6.2 percent. This has let them fill up a bigger percentage of seats, up by 1.4 points to 85.8%, even though there was a 4.7% drop when it came to traffic.

The airlines’ domestic capacity was cut far more compared to its international capacity. Plus, the domestic factors of load show these results. The carriers were able to fill up 86.6% of the domestic flight seats, up by 1.8 points, even though there was a deep recession across the nation.

International factors of load also rose to 84.4%, but only by 0.5 points more than the amounts from June to August in 2008 lodged by the biggest international carriers. Some people are pessimistic when it comes to what will be coming next for the airlines. Recent strong factors of load and proof of better close-in bookings aside, volumes of passenger are almost definitely about to drop precipitously once Labor Day is over. Existing volumes tend to be driven by travel of leisure, which drops whenever schools open up again.

Travel of business, the secret to profitability of airlines, normally returns whenever unemployment drops and this usually happens near the end of the recovery of the economy instead of the beginning. Also, ominous signs were seen within the recent airline announcements that baggage fees were being raised on international travel and domestic trips. These fees that are higher show current increases in airfare that were marginal. In the outlook in the near-term for significant yield growth, things remain poor.

However, fall trends are encouraging. As business travelers’ demands aren’t great enough, it is still better than before. A trend line has been seen on improvements in corporate travel. Although it is less compared to last year, it is still better than it once was.

Within the past few months, people have called the demand flat. Now it can be described as slowly inching its way upward. Business travel happens to be a bit better compared to how it was from April to May. Several months don’t necessarily make trends right away. However, some sense can be felt that things are more stable and moving upward.

Who knows more about what you should provide your little one during airline travel than a flight attendant? Here are some tips from the experts to make your next trip through the clouds with the family a peaceful experience.

What to Bring Along for the Kids during Airline Travel

·         Books- Bring along a few of your child’s favorite story books. For children that are slightly older hidden treasure books are ideal as you have endless possibilities for games and discussion. Coloring books may also be appreciated by your little one.

·         DVDs- If you have one bring along a portable DVD player. For even the youngest passengers this item can be a lifesaver!

·         Snacks & Drinks- Baby may become hungry and thirsty during airline travel so you are well advised to bring along much loved treats and plenty of water and or juice. More airlines are dropping food service so being ready for hunger pangs can quiet a loud, rambunctious child.

Special Concerns during Airline Travel with Baby

One thing you may not have thought of is how the pressure of airline travel will affect your baby’s ears. The best way to ensure your baby doesn’t suffer with painful ear pressure is to bottle or breast feed them during the take off and landing. It will keep baby calm and relaxed and it’s the perfect solution to this particular problem.

Take care of your garbage before landing. Bring along a plastic bag that seals with you so you don’t have to rely on the staff to provide you with one and gather up all baby’s garbage such as wipes, diapers and paper towels. You don’t want to make more work for the crew.

Airline travel doesn’t have to be a nightmare or a situation that is dreaded when you bring along the little ones. Just have plenty of supplies to distract baby if she becomes fussing during the trip. It won’t last forever and before you know it you will have reached your destination and are ready for a good time.
