Bereavement and Medical Emergency Airfares
Sometimes airlines will offer a consumer special cheap tickets at discounts for people who are members of a particular group or for those who are in a unique situation. You need to be sure that you know whether or not you are entitled to a special fare.
One special situation that may come up is a loved one gets ill or has a medical emergency while you are away. Someone you love may also pass away while you are on vacation.
When a medical emergency or an unexpected death occurs while a family member is away, it can be difficult to locate and fined an emergency ticket for a flight home. It is a common practice that airlines charge a high price for tickets that are not bought ahead of time, especially if you do not know when you will be coming back.
For several years, airlines have given consumers discount tickets for bereavement. However, most airlines have done away with or have steeply reduced their bereavement airfare and family emergency airfares last year. Airlines are saying that competition has affected the market so much that they cannot afford to drop ticket prices any more.
Last minute tickets with an open return date can cost one thousand dollars or more. However, there are three major airlines in the United States that are still committed to helping people who have family emergencies while away from home on vacation. Northwest Airlines, United Airlines and American Airlines still offer tickets for bereavement or family emergencies.
In order to get a medical emergency ticket or bereavement ticket there are a few steps that you should follow. First of all, call the reservation department of the airline you are going to use. You cannot get information for these types of tickets online. This may be because airlines do not want to admit that they have these types of fares of on their sites. Let the reservation agent know that you are having a medical emergency or someone has passed away during your trip and that you need an airline ticket with the reduced rated.
Remember that you have to be a member of the immediate family. You must be a parent, sister, brother, child or grandchild or the person who has died or who is ill. If there are extenuating circumstances than explain these circumstances to the reservation agent and they may bend the rules for you.
The agent for the airline will verify what you are telling them so be prepared with the full name of your relative , the name and number of the hospital or funeral home and the name and number of the doctor in charge.
Flights have to be booked in one phone call. Be prepared with the day and time that you want to leave before you make the call. If the reservation agent that you talk to first does not seem to want to help you then hang up the phone and dial the reservation office again. You may want to check Kayak.com, Priceline.com and other cheap carriers that are in your area to see what the price would be for an average ticket. You might discover that you will find a cheaper option on the internet that will cost less than a bereavement ticket.
