Long distance trains are not at all like their commuter cousins. They feature comfortable chairs and a relaxed atmosphere, not quite like any other type of travel. You have plenty of room to walk around or stretch out. The view is often magnificent.

Many trains run only once per day, or sometimes even less, so do not assume you can just show up and go. Summers and holidays are especially busy times so you will want to book your trip well in advance. The booking process is simple. You don’t have to go to the nearest station. You can book by phone, via a toll-free number, and have your tickets mailed to you.
The schedules for certain scenic routes are set so that the best viewing areas will be covered in daylight. Long distance runs have special cars that are nearly all glass for a breathtaking panoramic view.
Here are some items to pack. You probably have a few more ideas, but do try to keep it to a minimum.
Take a small blanket and pillow. In addition, it is good to have earplugs and eyeshades if you are a light sleeper.
Some obvious items need hardly be mentioned. These include grooming items and any medications, whether prescription or not, that you may need in route.
Maps of the journey are fun to look at as you pass through. The same applies to information about any historic areas.
The whole trip is not filled with spectacular scenery. You will want to plan for diversions as well. Bring books and magazines, especially if they pertain to either the journey or the destination. Battery operated book lights may be useful too.
Portable music players, games and portable DVD players help pass the time. Be sure you have brought enough batteries and don’t forget a headphone set.
Food choices depend, in part, on how far you are going and how much you want to spend. The dining car, while expensive, is usually filled with interesting fellow travelers, and the food is generally good. The dining times are set and if you miss your time, you are out of luck, except for the snack area, which you can happily miss. You will want to bring snacks at least.
Bring enough cash for the journey. There is no ATM on the train. However, do not expose a lot of money to anyone.
Some miscellaneous items include a watch with an alarm and a small flashlight. You will find a small binocular or telescope is nice to have too.
Plan to dress comfortably and casually. There is little formality on the train. Be sure you have comfortable shoes. Don’t forget to pack for the weather at your destination.
