Guanajuato Part of Mexico’s History

Know the past of Hispanic New Mexico, there is no better place to do it than in the state of Guanajuato.

If you are planning to visit Mexico, then you should consider taking a tour through the novo Hispanic past of Mexico, and there is no better place to do this than in the state of Guanajuato.  Along with Zacatecas and San Luis Potosi, Guanajuato is a tourist spot that is filled with ghost stories, legends of gold and silver burials and a heavy and rich historic past that mingles perfectly in the present with singing, dancing and an exquisite cuisine.

A family tourist stop, Guanajuato is probably known best to the world as the location for the Hollywood movie “La mexicana” with Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts; indeed, there is a lot to experience and visit in Guanajuato.  As it happens with most modern and live cities, there is the “old” Guanajuato, where the streets have still the echo of the big dresses and horse hoofs as they did when they were first built.

As a tourist, Guanajuato can offer you the wonderful experience of a peek into the past of the area and what during the Hispanic colony, Mexico was; the callejoneadas are always popular between residents and tourists, both national and foreign.  Signing traditional songs with a group of modern day university students will bring back memories for many and give a excuse for romance for so many others.

Alongside the traditional callejoneadas there are legend trovadours that also recite the most popular legends of Guanajuato disguised as friars or monks, in some cases, they take it “a bit too far” and actually wear thriller-type make up…  though it might not be it.

Guanajuato definitely is one of the most attractive and interesting places to visit in Mexico, still as familiar as you want, you can take the family and visit The House of Legends. In this museum, they have representations and interactive games that depict and explain the most popular legends of Guanajuato, such as the legend of the Kiss, the student and the graveyard and the mine ghouls.

Just across the street lies the other most popular museum in Mexico:  The House of the Mummies; where people that once lived and breathed the same air that the tourist is breathing are now on display, mummified by natural causes.  It might seem eerie for many but it is indeed an interesting tour.

However, not everything is learning, there is also a very active night life in Guanajuato; nonetheless, for some adventurous spirits, they prefer to drive the few hours distance and enter Zacatecas, where most night clubs are “underground” in a very literal way.  Since Zacatecas was a mainly mining city, there are thousands of mines dug all around the place and it is common for locals and visitors to enter the earth looking for a wonderful time.

So whether you are looking for a nice family vacation that is educational or want to experience the best in spook cities in Mexico, Guanajuato is definitely the place to be.  If you choose your hotel correctly, the ghost and ghouls come included on the rate!
