How to Travel with Pets

How to travel with pets.

In many cases, pets are a part of the family. It would be unthinkable to travel without them. Not all animals, such as very large animals or exotics, are well suited for every type of family travel. Even for the pets that do travel well, there are a number of important considerations.

Check with your veterinarian before you go. Each species has its own requirements. In addition, every pet is a little different. If your dog, for example, tends to be hyperactive, your vet may prescribe a sedative to help both your pet and you through the journey.

If you are considering air travel with your pet, start by being sure of the airline’s rules. Each airline has a different set of rules for flying with your pet.

Theoretically, the Safe Air Travel for Animals Act protects pets while flying; although there are several things that you need to be aware of before you go. Each airline has a different pet carrier requirement so be sure yours is right. Also, regardless of the rules, be sure your pet carrier is large enough to allow your pet to move around, at least a little, while in transit. Make every effort to ensure a direct flight, if at all possible. Just like luggage, pets get lost more often if they must change planes. Again just like luggage, be sure your contact information, the name of the dog and any special needs it may have are clearly affixed to the carrier, even if this information is already on the collar.

Other types of public transportation are not generally pet friendly. The major ship, train and bus lines do not allow pets, although some smaller “boutique lines” do. Hotels and motels are much easier to deal with if you are traveling with your pet. While many prohibit pets, it is easy to go online and run a simple search for pet friendly accommodations. It’s a good idea to reconfirm it when you make your booking, as rules do sometimes change.

Similarly, it is relatively easy to find local parks that allow pets in virtually any city. Beaches are sometimes not so friendly to pets, so you should inquire first.

Restaurants can be trickier as most state laws prohibit pets in restaurants. In many cases, the restrictions are limited to the indoor areas and you can bring your pet if you sit outdoors. This isn’t much consolation if you are traveling to a cold place.

It is much easier to travel with pets by car. However, there are still some things to consider. Dogs tend to be good car travelers while cats do not. You need to make the call as to whether or not you will keep them in a carrier. If not, be sure they cannot get out. Many dogs are killed each year because they jump out of car windows. Some pets are susceptible to motion sickness. If that is your situation, see your vet.

Traveling with your pet is problematic. However, if it is something that you simply must do, it can be done. Plan ahead, use some common sense and know the rules.
