Traveling Long Distance with Kids

Travel, whether for fun or business can be trying on even the most ardent of adults. But when you throw the family children into the mix it can become downright taxing on your mental state of mind and your physical well being.

Children tend to be overly active and it is hard to keep them occupied for any extreme length of time. It used to be that families played games on long trips to keep everyone involved and to help keep the younger minds occupied during a trip. Today’s family basis has more to do with everyone doing their own thing and the result s that it is hard to get them to agree on everyone doing the same thing no matter what it is. As a result the parents often simply give in and allow everyone to do what makes them happy and keeps the peace.

Gone are the road bingo games that families used to play when traveling by car and the carrying on of conversations is simply a thing of the past any more.

Portable DVD players and MP3 players do a good job but they can lose their appeal on a long trip. That is of course assuming that you can keep them powered up for an extended trip. This allows everyone to rather do their own thing either watching movies or listening to music, both via headphones, without bothering anyone else on the trip.

It is also advisable to make sure that you bring along enough of the families favorite snacks and drinks to keep everyone happy. This will serve two purposes. It will keep the peace on the trip and it will save you quite a bit of trouble and money. Everyone knows that it is cheaper to bring these things from home than it is to use a vending machine. But did you stop to think that some of the things that your family loves to ingest might be regional favorites? What that means that some of the goodies might only be available where you live and not en-route or at your destination.

A good example of this is back in the seventies and eighties Coors beer was not available outside of Colorado and as a result, if that was the adults beverage of choice and you traveled to New York or Florida, you were out of luck. Today you can find that beverage world wide but that was not always the case and it does illustrate the point nicely.

What it boils down to is that a small amount of pre planning will go a long way towards making the overall travel experience easier on you and more memorable on the rest of the family. There is no sense in making things harder on you than it is already going to be so take the time to plan as much of the small details in advance and then sit back and enjoy the trip the way that you should. With no cares or worries to contend with..
