When Travel Plans are Busted
Most people plan their holiday vacations when there is a merger of the “off-duty” calendar dates among all the members of the family. Therefore, parents have to juggle their working schedule to match that of their children; otherwise they will not be able to travel anywhere anytime.
As it often happens, during these merged occasions, the first ones that apply or request for the time off will be the ones that will actually get the off duty permission. Sadly, sometimes the vacation trips are cancelled due to any number of reasons such as that the boss decided to go on a vacation and he needs someone to be there; because it was a better political solution to let the “minority” employee go on vacation and so on.
So what to do when your family is or was all set to go to the holiday trip and you got cancelled due to “other circumstances”? While it will be indeed disappointing for you and your family, there are things that you can do even if you are not traveling to a far away land.
Take a moment or two to look through the internet and find your hometown or city; undoubtedly there are other cities and towns surrounding it, places that you can visit within driving distance and that will allow you to go forth and back within the same day. Of course, you might want to consider this as an opportunity to log into a hotel and spend a nice mini-vacation with your family.
Do not be afraid to try visiting a small town, indeed, there are millions of horror stories but these are actually overblown versions of small events that happened at once point in life. But these are nothing more than stories and should not be regarded as anything else but stories.
Of course, if this is the path that you and your family have decided to take, remember that it is always a good idea to pack, even if it is a one-hour drive to the town that you are going to visit. This is particularly important if you have children under the age of 15 and despite the fact that most horror histories are just situations that were blown out of proportion, do let friends and family members know that you are taking that small trip.
This great alternative will cost you little money and will not take any time off from your busy professional schedule; you will be able to spend quality time with those that you love. Even if you are in a cold city full of snow and miss on the soft warm beaches of a southern tourist destination, it will be a wonderful opportunity if you make it so.
Your family does want to escape to this tourist location, that is true; but they want to spend time together more than anything; so taking small trips is a good answer to finish two items on one single stroke.
As always, remember to drive safely and with caution, it will be always best for you to get in late to work than to never arrive at all.
