While most of these companies will not require you to have insurance and will basically leave it to you to have it or not, it will always be a good thing to have your home insured. Having someone else in the house should be also checked and verified with your insurance company and, of course, review the insurance policy so that there are no “unexpected events” in the sad occurrence of an accident.
Overall, these home exchange programs are safe in terms that you take the proper precautions and do not leave those things that are important to you unattended or unprotected. As long as you use your common sense you will be fine and will have the opportunity of a lifetime when visiting the house of someone else, whether it is in your own country or overseas.
